Trail boss Debra Strickland
gives the signal to saddle up as Kathy Pallares, Executive Director
of the Pahrump Valley Chamber of Commerce, slips a few more letters
into her saddle bag at the start of the second annual Pony Express
Trail Ride, Saturday morning. Moments later, the lead team (below)
heads into the desert west of Pahrump. The first few riders began arriving
at the Longstreet Inn and Casino in Amargosa Valley at just after 3
p.m. The trail ride covered 22 miles, involved 59 riders and raised
approximately $1,500 for the Chamber of Commerce, which organized the
event.

All of the 103 pieces of mail delivered from Pahrump to Amargosa were
stamped by Pahrump Postmaster Bob Philpot (left). At the end of the
trail, Lynda Gatzke leads a riderless horse that took part as a tribute
to the firefighters killed Sept. 11. In the saddle is a firefighter's
helmet, in the stirrups a pair of empty boots. The tribute, put together
by the Pahrump Valley Fire-Rescue Service and the newly formed Iron
Horse Children's Ranch, almost didn't happen. What cinched it was when
scheduled rider Dave Corso broke some ribs after being thrown from
a horse.
